The maths of small steps
10 words a day is 70 a week, about 300 a month and 3,650 a year. Most everyday conversation uses the few thousand most common words, so a year of regular study brings you close to the vocabulary you need for basic communication.
Consistency matters more than speed. Someone who starts with 50 words a day and quits on day three is far behind someone who keeps going with 10.
Why 10?
10 words take five to ten minutes to learn, so they fit into even a busy day, with time left to review previous days.
10 words is also an amount the brain can comfortably handle in one session. More than that increases tomorrow’s review load and lowers motivation.
What does it mean to “know” a word?
Understanding it when you see it, recognizing it when you hear it and being able to say it when you need it. That’s why every word on LinguDay comes with its meaning, pronunciation, audio and an example sentence.
Marking a word as learned is the first step; recalling it in the daily test is what makes it stick.
A daily routine
At the same time every day, open today’s words, listen and repeat them out loud, read the example sentences and take the daily test. Keep one day a week for a conversation lesson.
The progress page shows your study days and learned words; not breaking your streak is the best motivation.
